Why this programme…?

We start with a fanfare today! And maybe we should do so every concert… why not? This particular fanfare is written by Archie John, fellow student at the Royal Academy of Music, and is entitled ‘Branches of Joy’ (2022). Archie says that this is “a celebratory fanfare with intertwining lines, decorations and elaborations springing out of a central melody creating branches of music flowering from a unified idea.”

We pass rather smoothly then, onto Samuel Barber’s Summer Music (1956) – a piece intended to be reminiscent of the joyous season before last.

Next up is a Lumas favourite – and now regular – by W.A Mozart, K.213, the Divertimento No. 8 (1775). A regular for a reason, performing this piece allows us to be at our most exploratory and experimental with interpretation.

We finish with Lalo Schifrin’s* La Nouvelle Orleans (1987). A tale off two halves, this piece will invite you on one journey – one with a minimalist sound world and rigidly structured notation – and unexpectedly but completely spin around to another – one rather more representative of the title, and a bit of a rollercoaster ride into jazz. Maybe we should have kept that as a surprise… but no doubt it will still be one!

*The very same who is responsible for the ‘Mission:Impossible’ theme.
