DESCRIPTION:Programme: \nArchie John* Fanfare: Branches of Joy  \nSamuel Barber Summer Music  \nW.A Mozart Divertimento No. 8\, K.213  \nLalo Schifrin La Nouvelle Orleans  \n*Student at the Royal Academy of Music (www.archiejohncomposer.com) \n\nWhy this programme…? \nWe start with a fanfare today! And maybe we should do so every concert… why not? This particular fanfare is written by Archie John\, fellow student at the Royal Academy of Music\, and is entitled ‘Branches of Joy’ (2022). Archie says that this is “a celebratory fanfare with intertwining lines\, decorations and elaborations springing out of a central melody creating branches of music flowering from a unified idea.” \nWe pass rather smoothly then\, onto Samuel Barber’s Summer Music (1956) – a piece intended to be reminiscent of the joyous season before last. \nNext up is a Lumas favourite – and now regular – by W.A Mozart\, K.213\, the Divertimento No. 8 (1775). A regular for a reason\, performing this piece allows us to be at our most exploratory and experimental with interpretation. \nWe finish with Lalo Schifrin’s* La Nouvelle Orleans (1987). A tale off two halves\, this piece will invite you on one journey – one with a minimalist sound world and rigidly structured notation – and unexpectedly but completely spin around to another – one rather more representative of the title\, and a bit of a rollercoaster ride into jazz. Maybe we should have kept that as a surprise… but no doubt it will still be one! \n*The very same who is responsible for the ‘Mission:Impossible’ theme. \n

DESCRIPTION:Programme: \nOliver Knussen Three Little Fantasies  \n\nI. Tempo guisto\nII. Lento e calmo\nIII. Vivace\n\nJean Françaix Wind Quintet No.1 \n\nI. Andante tranquillo – Allegro assai\nII. Presto\nIII. Tema con variazioni\nIV. Tempo di marcia francese\n\n\nWhy this programme…? \nJean Françaix’s first wind quintet (1948) is a perfect example of the composer’s light and humorous aesthetic which stayed consistent through out his career. He was a strong believer in structure and form with the audience’s enjoyment at heart. (Put differently\, one might describe him as a neoclassic composer who rejected atonality.) The piece plays like a theatrical rollercoaster ride. \nBefore that is Oliver Knussen’s Three Little Fantasies (1970/83)\, an early work from the British composer\, which he described as “concentrated in manner and light in effect.” Lumas thoroughly enjoy playing these\, and they certainly do pack a punch. In only seven minutes there’s cadenzas for each instrument\, an entire klangfarbenmelodie (one continuous melody passed around the group)\, and a canon at four different speeds. \n

DESCRIPTION:Programme: \nGunther Schuller Suite for Wind Quintet  \n\nI. Prelude. Allegro\nII. Blues. Andante\nIII. Toccata. Presto\n\nThea Musgrave Wind Quintet  \nJohn Cage Five \nValerie Coleman Afro-Cuban Concerto  \n\nI. Afro\nII. Vocalise\nIII. Danza\n\n\nWhy this programme…? \nFirst and last pieces mirror each other with inspiration from two different cultures. In between are two pieces coming from two separate schools of 20th century thought despite being written just four years apart. \nWe open our first programme of the new year with Schuller’s  jazz inspired suite for wind quintet (1945)  – the prelude kicking the American theme of our programme into motion. A particular favourite for Lumas is the ‘blues’ second movement which transforms the wind quintet into something else entirely – slides from Johan\, and an easy going bass line from Flo. \nOnto Thea Musgrave’s dramatic wind quintet (1992) which she describes as ‘an opera without plot’. It’s a piece that really challenges our ability to blend our five instruments together\, then heads towards virtuosity in the madness\, through a beguiling bassoon cadenza-like solo\, to then finish with the same blend from the start. \nJohn Cage’s Five (1988) was composed for any five voices (or instruments) and will require us to be keeping a keen eye on a stopwatch on each of our stands. Each performance is different from the next (which is\, some might say… a little like jazz music) as we each get a choice of three notes to play within numerous time frames. The piece is also exactly five minutes in length. \nWe end with the Afro-Cuban Concerto (2001) by composer and flautist Valerie Coleman. The performers are given rotating soloistic freedom above a solid accompaniment of traditional 6/8 rhythmic dialogues; there’s interweaving harmonies; and a rhumba with “layers upon layers of percussive rhythms.” Rather melodious and joyous sounding\, Coleman says that “it is the feel of spirituality\, passion\, and rhythmic precisions that brings the essence of Afro-Cuban music to life in this piece”.

SUMMARY:Notting Hill Concerts
DESCRIPTION:Programme: \nJacques Ibert Trois Pièces Brèves \n\nI. Allegro\nII. Andante\nIII. Assez lent – Allegro scherzando\n\nPoldowski Suite miniature de canons à dancer for Wind Quintet \n\nI. Passemaise\nII. Musette\nIII. Minuetto\nIV. Rigaudon\nV. Gigue\n\nFranz Danzi Wind Quintet in Bb Major\, Op.56\, No. 1 \n\nI. Allegretto\nII. Andante con moto\nIII. Menuetto. Allegretto\nIV. Allegretto\n\nEugène Bozza Scherzo \n\nWhy this programme…? \nDespite the individual successes of all of the above composers\, they are perhaps most well known for their wind music. Indeed\, their contributions make them prolific. \nMost interestingly and likely most unheard of is Poldowski. The name\, one of many professional pseudonyms for Belgium born Régine Wieniawski. Her life’s biography is full of sceptical contradictions. For example she may have studied at the Brussel’s conservatory but there’s no record of her having been there. She also may have been requested to play for Queen Elizabeth of Belgium in 1912. The piece we’re playing today could have been published around 1934. We do know however that in 1923 she gave a series of midday recitals just around the corner from St Peter’s at the Hyde Park Hotel. \nPublished around the same time then were Ibert’s three pieces in 1930. The style of the era clear to see in both pieces. \nDanzi’s life is also one of interest despite the fact that he is now most renowned as a mentor of Carl Maria von Weber. He wrote nine wind quintets however\, three sets of three\, which does not go unnoticed! Today we play the first from the very first set. Interestingly enough (if you watched Lumas perform at St Dustan in the West or at City Music Society) this set is dedicated to Antoine Reicha. \nBozza provides the earliest work of the programme (1945)\, giving the name scherzo real meaning\, and bringing the conclusion of the concert as well as Lumas’ Autumn to a rousing finish!

These later works are a sign of Mozart at the top of his game\, and by exploring the power of arrangements\, we hope to pair this music together like you’ve never heard before. \n\nThe arrangement of the Glass Harmonica comes with a twist however – Sally Beamish’s very own variations. Written in 2008\, offering some light relief from the Mozart!

Lustig: Mässig schnelle Viertel\nII. Walzer: Durchweg sehr leise\nIII. Ruhig und einfach\nIV. Schnelle Viertel\nV. Sehr lebhaft\n\n\nWhy this programme…? \nWe continue to experiment with the form of our programmes – this time around\, two works not in the regular canon are sandwiched in between two of the absolute stock and classics of wind quintet repertoire. \nBoth arrangements of older music are conceived by two of Britain’s foremost 20th century composers. Oliver Knussen arranges Perotin whilst Sally Beamish arranges Mozart. We were really interested in the differences in the way each went about the process of ‘arranging’. And although their final products are contrasting\, there is similarity in the sense that each composer’s individual personalities and sounds are very much prevalent. It’s also worth noting that both composers decided to use cor Anglais in place of oboe.
